WotLK Shadowmourne Guide

Welcome to another Wrath of the Leach king guide. Today we’re putting some limelight on the process of obtaining a Shadowmourne axe. We have extremely simplified the process and put it down in steps so that you don’t miss out on anything.

Alright, before showing you the nitty-gritty stuff. We think it's crucial to get some details about the axe itself. So…

What is Shadowmourne?

Shadowmourne is a legendary two-handed axe that can be earned by Death Knights, Paladins, and Warriors through a difficult quest chain. Patch 3.3.0 added the Icecrown Citadel raiding instance along with the axe and chain of quests. Most of the quest has to be done in the 25-man instance, and the boss fights can be either normal or heroic.

Even though player and item stat levels have gone up since the axe became available, it is still hard to get. This is mostly because raids are locked once a week, but there are still a few quests that are hard to do in a raid because they have hard timings or mechanics.

Also, the increased damage that most raids can do now is much more than what the encounters were made for. This can make it harder to finish quests that require a certain number of things to happen during a fight. Still, the legendary axe is still worth the work for players who put in the time and effort to get it.

How to get shadowmourne in Wotlk?

Alright, time to get some business done. Let's talk about what you'll be doing when you try to get Shadowmourne. Shadowmourne takes about two weeks to get, just like the other legendary items mentioned above. In addition to the weapon, you'll also get cosmetic items that you can sell to other players.

The process of getting shadowmourne starts with getting friendly with Ashen Verdict. Explained as follows:

Step 1. Ashen Verdict

To get Shadowmourne, you have to be Friendly with the Ashen Verdict. This is because the first quest is only available when you have this reputation level. To do that, All you have to do is clear out the trash in Ice crown Citadel until you reach Lord Marrowgar, the first boss of the raid, more than once.

Go in, take out the trash, leave, set up again, and do it again. Once Icecrown Citadel comes out, players will be dying to get reputation runs in because the Ashen Verdict reputation gives them other benefits.

Step 2. The Sacred and the Corrupt

After you earn enough reputation, you can finally start the long quest line. To start it, go to Highlord Mograine, who is on the right side of the entrance to Icecrown Citadel.

You will end up with:

-25 Primordial Saronite Icons. You can buy Primordial Saronite for 135 Gold each on the Auction House or from Legacy Justice Quartermasters in Dalaran and Icecrown Citadel. (Don't have enough gold? Our WotLK Classic Gold is on hot sale now!)

-Light's Vengeance back. Icon of Light's Vengeance in a Dragonblight cave (74, 24).

-When you kill Festergut, you can take Festergut's Acidic Blood Icon.

-Kill Rotface and take his stuff. The Acidic Blood Icon of Rotface Rotface's Blood Is Very Acidic.

-Try not to kill trash since you'll need it for your next quest.

When you have all of these things, you can go back to Highlord Mograine, turn in the quest, and get Shadow's Edge.

Step 3. Feast for the Soul

So now you have finished the first quest in the chain and gotten the Shadowmourne weapon part, you'll need to feed the weapon 50 souls. All you have to do is kill 50 of the Lich King's servants. These can be either bosses or trash, so if you want to do some more Ashen Verdict grinding, you'll be done quickly. Now that Shadow's Edge has been fed souls, it's time for the infusions, which may be the most challenging part of the questline.

Step 4. Unholy Infusion

In this quest, you have to kill Professor Putricide with a weapon that has some of his slime mixed into it. The easiest way to do this is to start the encounter with Professor Putricide on 25-man and keep going through the steps until he has just under 80% health left. From there, wait for Putricide to make three Slime Puddles, go to his table, and drink the potion that will turn you into an abomination.

After that, you'll want the boss to be below 80% health because that will start phase 2, and you'll want to be completely changed into an abomination. Once you've been turned into an abomination, you'll have a few abilities on your Action Bar. For this quest, you'll want to use the first and fourth abilities.

With the first ability, you can walk up to the slimes and eat them until the bar on your right is complete. Then, click on the fourth ability, which will add Unholy power to your Shadow's Edge, and that's it.

Step 5. Blood Infusion

On the pull, the player should follow the tank closely to obtain the Blood Mirror debuff, which shares half the tank's damage with the nearest player. The player does not need to keep this buff, simply receive it, therefore they will usually get it and then leave to let the offtank handle the Blood Mirror debuff.

Getting the Blood Mirror debuff adds a permanent debuff called Gushing Wound. Gushing Wound deals 1500 damage each second and decreases damage by 10%. This makes the following step harder, but not impossible. Lana'thel Essence of the Blood Queen debuff benefits the top DPS player (also known as her "bite").

In a perfect case, the quester would receive this debuff first, although they can still complete it if bitten twice. Once bitten, the player waits 60 seconds for the debuff to expire, then uses Vampiric Bite on another player. Biting another player increases the stacks of Gushing Wound, increasing the debuff's damage and advancing the player's goal. To accomplish the mission, the player must bite three times and kill Blood-Queen Lana'thel.

The task has no time limit, however it's harder if the player isn't the first bitten. In post-WotLK WoW, it will be tough for a level 80 player to lead the raid in DPS. If the raid is complicit, they may hold DPS until the player is bitten. Another typical approach is to have the first person bitten bite the player as quickly as possible and then die to make biting others simpler.

The combat must be long enough for the player to bite three individuals. Post-WotLK, players do considerably more damage than at level 80. The raid must wait until the third bite before killing Lana'thel. If the player is the first to be bitten, they can do it on the fourth bite phase, when four players must bite.

In a ten-man raid, if the player is the second bitten, the first bitten player MUST die before the second bite phase otherwise the quester won't be able to finish three bites until there are more bitten players than can be bitten. In a 25-man raid capable of eight bites, the first player can live, but it is still suggested to let them die, as missing one lvl 85+ player is easier than finding eight non-bitten individuals.

Step 6. Frost Infusions

The third and perhaps easiest infusion is the frost one, which requires Sindragosa to use her Frost Breath ability on you four times. Doing that is hardly difficult, you just have to stand out and not avoid the ability, then kill Sindragosa, and that's it. Make sure that you don't die in the process.

Step 7. The Splintered Throne

Doing those infusions above was the easy part. The real deal starts with this quest; collecting 50 Shadowfrost Shards to get your Shadowmourne. When you kill a boss, it might drop a Shadowfrost Shard, but it's not guaranteed. Since there are 13 bosses in the raid, it will take a while.

Always try to finish the raid in 25-man heroic if you can, since the higher difficulty will increase the number of shards that drop each week. Shadow's Edge will become Shadowmourne when the quest is done and turned in.

Step 8. The Lich King’s Last Stand

Once you have Shadowmourne, beat the Lich King to get some more goodies. When you kill him, he'll drop a Sealed Chest, which you can give to Highlord Mograine. In return, he'll give you an Unsealed Chest. This Unsealed Chest has five items that, when given to their rightful owners, will give you more WotLK items and a mount.
