Short version: it's a seasonal affix that replaces the old weekly +7 slot. Kicks in at Mythic+ 4 and above. One of four variants is active each week — you don't get to pick.

Ascendant — Burst the Right Target or Pay For It
What it does
At some point during a trash pull, one non-boss mob randomly gets Ascendant — beefed up HP, higher damage, sometimes new casts. There's a visual cue (a glow effect), so it's not hard to spot. The annoying part is you can't predict which mob gets it.
What players keep asking
- Does it affect bosses? — No. Trash only.
- Can you tell which mob will get it before it happens? — Nope. It's random per pull.
- Should it always be the kill target? — Yes, immediately. No debate.
- Does it proc on every pull? — Not every single one, but expect it on anything big.
How to handle it
If you're DPS, the moment something lights up, you switch. Don't finish your combo on the wrong target hoping someone else gets it — just switch. Tanks, pull ascended mobs away from the pack because their cleave or AoE abilities hurt more now. Healers, the burst phase right as it dies is when people drop — be ready. On higher keys, save your kick for whatever new cast the mob picked up, because those often hit hard and aren't telegraphed.
Voidbound — Don't Stand in Black Stuff (The Whole Run)
What it does
Void zones — dark circles on the ground — keep appearing throughout the dungeon. They stick around for 30 to 45 seconds, deal stacking damage if you're in them, and can apply a healing reduction debuff. In tight corridors, they pile up fast.

- How long do they last? — 30–45 seconds. Long enough to be genuinely inconvenient.
- Can they box you in? — Absolutely. Narrow sections of some dungeons become a real problem.
- Is it lethal on high keys? — Two or three ticks at +20 and you're dead. Don't test it.
- Can tanks just soak them? — No. This isn't a soak mechanic. Move.
How to handle it
This is one of those affixes where good players look smooth and bad players look frantic — the difference is anticipation. Start kiting enemies toward fresh ground before the old ground fills up, not after. Spots with long hallways or tight doorways are where groups fall apart; figure out your pull boundaries before you start. Healers, anyone who clips a zone is going to spike — keep your eyes on debuff durations and don't let someone die to a tick you saw coming.
Pulsar — Stack When the Ring Appears, Every Time
What it does
Every 20–25 seconds, the dungeon fires a party-wide AoE pulse. The damage is split between everyone in range, so it's shared — not individual. There's a visual indicator before it fires, giving you a moment to react. On its own, one Pulsar is manageable. When it overlaps with a scary boss mechanic, it's a wipe.
What players keep asking
- How often does it fire? — Roughly every 20–25 seconds. Get a WeakAura for the timer.
- Shared or per-player damage? — Shared. If someone's out of range, everyone else takes more.
- Can you mitigate it? — Yes — personal defensives, healer CDs, and being stacked all help.
- Does it line up with boss abilities? — It can and it will. That's the whole problem.
How to handle it
Stack on every Pulsar, no exceptions. The one time someone decides to stay spread for another mechanic and Pulsar fires is the one time your healer can't top everyone in time. Assign healer cooldowns to the Pulsars that overlap with high-damage boss phases, not to the ones in the clear. And if you're the tank, don't run off to reposition right as the ring appears — that costs your group a split.
Devour — Keep the Orbs Away From the Mobs
What it does
Enemies periodically spawn or leave behind void matter orbs. If those orbs reach enemies (especially casters and ranged mobs), the enemies absorb them and gain a stacking damage and movement speed buff — up to 15–25% increased damage per stack. Players can intercept the orbs to neutralize them before enemies grab them.
What players keep asking
- What happens if enemies eat the orbs? — They get a stacking damage buff. Let it stack too high and pulls get sloppy fast.
- Can players actually pick them up? — Yes, and that's usually the right call.
- Which mobs are the worst offenders? — Casters and ranged units. They're often out of melee and have more time to devour.
- Does the buff reset between pulls? — Yes. Fresh pull, clean slate.
How to handle it
Designate one or two ranged DPS to own this job. They're already at the back of the pack — they're in the best position to intercept orbs without losing uptime. Don't let melee try to chase orbs; they'll just drop off the mob and fall behind. On anything above +18, a mob with three or four Devour stacks is basically a mini-boss — it needs to die now. Healers, anyone who picks up orbs may take a hit, so keep them topped.
Checking the Weekly Affix
Xal'atath's Bargain rotates every weekly reset — Tuesday in NA, Wednesday in EU. To see what's active:

Adapting Your Comp by Affix Week
You don't need to rebuild from scratch every week, but at higher key levels it matters who you bring:
- Ascendant week — Bring burst specs. Ret Paladin, Assassination Rogue, BM Hunter. Anything that can dump damage on a priority target instantly.
- Voidbound week — Mobile specs hold up better. Windwalker, Outlaw, Havoc DH. The less time you spend repositioning, the better your uptime.
- Pulsar week — Healers with strong throughput cooldowns carry harder. Holy Paladin and Disc Priest both manage stacked damage well. Consider a defensive talent swap at +18+.
- Devour week — Ranged-heavy groups handle it more naturally. Two strong ranged DPS means you rarely lose orb intercept coverage.
Gear and Stats
Across all four variants, Versatility is your friend — flat damage reduction applies to everything Xal'atath's Bargain throws at you. On-use defensive trinkets are worth keeping in the bag. Healers should think about whether they want a throughput trinket (Pulsar weeks) or a cooldown-oriented one (Ascendant, Devour) depending on the week.

- Does Xal'atath's Bargain affect bosses? Mostly no. Ascendant is trash-only. Pulsar and Voidbound hazards can carry into boss arenas on some dungeon layouts, which is when things get spicy.
- Does this affix appear in heroic or normal dungeons? — No. Mythic+ only, starting at key level 4.
- Can any of these mechanics be dispelled? — No. You can't remove the affix itself. You adapt to it.
