TBC Anniversary Phase 2 Build Guide: Optimizing Your DPS for SSC & TK

With the launch of Phase 2: Overlords of Outland, the honeymoon phase of Karazhan is over. The jump in difficulty for Serpentshrine Cavern (SSC) and Tempest Keep (TK) is significant, and simply having "good gear" isn't enough anymore.

To survive Lady Vashj and Kael'thas Sunstrider, you need to transition into optimized raiding builds.

As we discussed in our [Phase 2 Class Tier List], ranged DPS dominates this phase—but only if you’re using the right talents and rotations. Here is how to optimize the top-performing specs for the TBC Anniversary meta by SSEgold.

5.0

Beast Mastery Hunter: The 1:1 Macro Mastery

The BM Hunter remains the king of Phase 2, but the gap between a "good" Hunter and a "great" Hunter comes down to Auto Shot clipping.

The Build

41/20/0. This spec maximizes pet damage and grants you The Beast Within, your primary cooldown for burn phases.

The Rotation

The "1:1 Macro" is your bread and butter. You must weave your Steady Shot between Auto Shots without delaying the latter.

Key Stat

You need 8.6% Hit Rating (142 hit rating). Once capped, stack Agility and Critical Strike.

Pro-Tip

In SSC, pet management is tricky. Use a Warpstalker for the Blink ability to keep your pet out of environmental hazards like Tainted Spores.

Destruction Warlock: The Shadow & Fire Powerhouse

Warlocks scale harder than any other class with Tier 5 gear. In Phase 2, you stop being a utility bot and start being a turret.

The Build

0/21/40 (Shadow Destruction).

The Rotation

You must Sacrifice your Succubus (Demonic Sacrifice) to gain the 15% Shadow Damage increase. After that, keep Curse of Elements up, then spam Shadow Bolt.

AoE Strategy

Phase 2 features massive "trash" packs. This is where Seed of Corruption shines. Ensure you have high Spell Hit (16% or 202 rating) so your Seeds don’t resist on crucial pulls.

Arcane Mage: Managing the "Mana Burn"

Mages see the biggest glow-up in Phase 2. Previously a middle-tier spec, the 2-piece Tier 5 set bonus increases the damage and mana cost of Arcane Blast, turning you into a monster.

The Build

40/0/21. This takes Arcane Power for burst and Icy Veins from the Frost tree for faster casting.

The Loop

Play a game of mana management: Use 3x Arcane Blast then drop the stack with Arcane Missiles to conserve mana. During Bloodlust/Heroism, ignore the conserve phase and spam Arcane Blast until your mana bar is empty.

The Secret

You must have a Shadow Priest in your group. Without a "Mana Battery," an Arcane Mage’s DPS will bottom out halfway through the fight.

Elemental Shaman: The Caster Battery

You aren't just there for your own numbers; you are there to make the Warlocks and Mages look like gods.

The Build

41/20/0.

The Rotation

Keep Totem of Wrath active at all times. Your priority is Lightning Bolt spam, weaving in Chain Lightning only when you have the mana to spare or on multi-target fights like Morogrim Tidewalker.

Raid Utility

Always prioritize your Mana Spring and Wrath totems. If a Warlock has to Life Tap less, your raid's overall DPS increases more than if you cast one extra Lightning Bolt.

Phase 2 Consumables: The Competitive Edge

Don't walk into TK without a full bag of buffs. In the Anniversary meta, these are non-negotiable:

  • Flask of Pure Death: The gold standard for Warlocks, Mages, and Shamans.
  • Relentless Assault: For Hunters and the few Melee brave enough to enter SSC.
  • Superior Wizard Oil: Apply this to your weapon for a flat Spell Power and Crit boost.
  • Haste Potions: Use these during Bloodlust to push your casting speed to the limit.

Conclusion

Phase 2 is a gear and skill check. By moving into these specific talent trees and mastering your "conserve vs. burn" phases, you’ll ensure your spot in the raid core.

Preparation is 90% of the battle in Outland—the other 10% is just not standing in the fire.
