Grinding Gear Games recently dropped an enormous amount of new information regarding Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5: Return of the Ancients during an interview featuring game directors Jonathan Rogers and Mark Roberts.
The discussion covered everything from balancing philosophy and campaign improvements to major ascendancy reworks and endgame progression systems. Most importantly, it confirmed that POE2’s developers are heavily focused on improving the overall player experience ahead of the game’s eventual 1.0 release.
According to the developers, roughly two-thirds of the remaining development effort before launch will focus entirely on game balance. That means players should expect significant meta shifts, ascendancy tuning, and large-scale gameplay changes over the next several months.
For players preparing for the next league, this may be one of the most transformative updates Path of Exile 2 has seen so far.

POE2 Developers Want Better Balance for Casual Players
One of the biggest takeaways from the interview was Grinding Gear Games’ focus on accessibility and smoother progression for average players.
Jonathan Rogers explained that many balance changes stemmed from his own gameplay struggles while testing imperfect builds. Rather than balancing only around top-tier theorycrafters, the developers want weaker or experimental builds to feel more viable throughout the campaign and endgame.
This philosophy has already led to several important changes:
Reduced Campaign Frustration
Act 3 has received multiple flow improvements to reduce unnecessary backtracking and confusing map layouts.
For example:
- After defeating Viper Napuatzi, players now move directly into the next zone
- Extra traversal sections have been removed
- Certain boss encounters have been streamlined
These changes aim to make the leveling experience smoother without reducing the challenge entirely.
Improved Boss Scaling for Freeze & Stun Builds
Grinding Gear Games also identified a major issue with freeze and stun archetypes.
Previously, increasing a boss’s HP also drastically increased their poise threshold, making crowd-control builds feel disproportionately weaker against tankier enemies.
Patch 0.5 adjusts this scaling so high-health bosses will now be easier to freeze or stun compared to before. This should significantly improve gameplay feel for many Monk, Sorceress, and crowd-control focused builds.
Atlas Tree Progression Is Becoming Less Grindy
Another major improvement arriving in Path of Exile 2 0.5 is streamlined Atlas progression.
Originally, maxing out league trees reportedly required 25-30 maps per specialization. Developers felt this was too time-consuming, even for experienced testers.
New changes include:
- Pinnacle bosses now grant six Atlas points repeatedly
- Completing all maps in a league zone grants full progression faster
- Atlas progression is shared across characters within the same league
This should dramatically reduce repetitive grinding and allow players to transition into endgame farming much sooner.
For players planning multiple characters this season, this shared progression system could become one of the best quality-of-life updates in POE2 so far.

Expedition Shops & Recombinators Are Gone
Grinding Gear Games confirmed that Expedition shops and Recombinators are being removed entirely.
The developers stated these systems were too difficult to balance and overly complicated for most players. Instead, POE2 is moving toward crafting systems that retain depth while being easier to understand and tune.
While some veteran crafters may miss Recombinators, the developers appear committed to simplifying overly bloated mechanics ahead of launch.
Martial Artist Ascendancy Might Be the Best Designed Class in POE2
The biggest reveal from the showcase was unquestionably the new Martial Artist ascendancy for Monk.
This ascendancy immediately generated massive excitement because every node appears both thematic and mechanically impactful.
Unlike some ascendancies where only a few nodes feel meaningful, the Martial Artist tree seems packed with powerful offensive and defensive options.
Why Martial Artist Looks So Strong
The ascendancy heavily emphasizes:
- Combo generation
- Shockwave mechanics
- Channeling gameplay
- Rune interactions
- Defensive scaling
- Unarmed combat synergies
Several standout mechanics include:
Bell Mechanics
The new bell system allows players to create AoE shockwaves, generate power charges, and massively amplify damage output.
One node even causes a permanent bell to appear on the player’s back, triggering shockwaves automatically on critical strikes.
This combination of mobility, AoE clearing, and boss damage gives the class incredible versatility.
Channeling While Moving
One of the most impressive reveals was the ability to channel attacks while moving.
Instead of being locked in place, Martial Artist builds can reposition during combat while continuously attacking and generating clones through power charge interactions.
This dramatically improves survivability and gameplay fluidity.
Way of the Mountain
The “Way of the Mountain” defensive line grants:
- Increased damage
- Reduced damage taken
- Higher stun threshold
- Massive defensive scaling
Visually, it even transforms the player with a rocky shell effect, reinforcing the ascendancy’s thematic identity.
Fists of Stone & Glove Scaling
Perhaps the most talked-about mechanic is Fists of Stone.
This node transforms gloves into a major build-defining item slot, enabling absurd defensive and offensive combinations while still allowing players to equip full body armor.
Some showcased glove interactions looked incredibly powerful, potentially opening entirely new archetypes for unarmed or hybrid builds.
Many players already expect Martial Artist to become one of the most played ascendancies in Path of Exile 2.
Gemling Legionnaire Gets a Crazy New Node
Another huge reveal was the new Gemling Legionnaire node: Advanced Thaumaturgy.
This node adds an entirely new quality effect to every skill gem in the game.
Instead of simply increasing damage numbers, Grinding Gear Games created unique interactions for hundreds of skills individually.
One showcased example modified Fireball to fire additional projectiles in a circular pattern.
This level of customization could completely redefine how many builds function.
The amount of development work required for this feature is enormous, but it perfectly showcases POE2’s focus on deep character customization.
Chronomancer Is Finally Getting Major Buffs
The Chronomancer ascendancy is also receiving significant improvements.
New Defensive Node: Phased Form
This new node grants:
- 30% reduced damage taken
- Delayed damage mechanics
- Strong synergy with Temporal Rift
The interaction allows skilled players to completely negate delayed damage through proper timing.
Importantly, the reduction also applies to damage-over-time effects, making it particularly strong against dangerous ground mechanics.
Reworked Inevitability
The reworked Inevitability node now functions more like a scaling offensive curse effect.
While less useful for clearing small packs, it appears extremely powerful for boss fights where damage amplification matters most.
These changes could finally make Chronomancer a competitive league starter option for many players.
POE2’s Meta Could Change Far More Than Players Expect
Despite some community complaints about limited balance changes, Patch 0.5 actually introduces an enormous amount of new customization.
The update includes:
- New ascendancies
- Reworked ascendancy nodes
- New runes
- Additional support gems
- New unique items
- Atlas progression changes
- Boss scaling adjustments
- Crafting system overhauls
- New defensive mechanics
Even without a full “meta reset,” these additions could dramatically reshape the strongest builds in Path of Exile 2.
Grinding Gear Games also confirmed that major balance resets are still expected before the official 1.0 launch.
