Diablo IV vs. Diablo III: First Impressions
With the introduction of Diablo IV, we can already notice some differences from its predecessors. The tone and atmosphere are much darker than in Diablo III, echoing the original menacing ambiance of Diablo World. The graphic design of the dungeon-crawling Diablo IV is mostly similar, if not a remastered version of Diablo II and Diablo III, with more opportunity for exploration. Visually speaking, Diablo IV has abandoned the over-saturated colorful visage of Diablo III and adopted more muted and sharper artwork with plenty of intriguing in-game cutscenes.
However, true innovation comes with character customization. Although it does not compete with the intricate visual-tailoring systems of other ARPG games, Diablo IV offers sufficient customization of your character through various body types, different face options and hairstyles, and other miscellaneous features; meanwhile, the previous Diablo games did not allow any changes except for armor coloring. Moreover, the transmogrification feature introduced in the expansion Reaper of Souls is also incorporated into Diablo IV as a Wardrobe accessible while in the towns.
Open World of Diablo IV
Unlike the previous Diablo games, Diablo IV has been revamped into an MMO system game and operates only through online servers without the possibility of offline accessibility. Meanwhile, this bold step into the evolution of Diablo may cause concerns about servers’ availability and dependence on other players, but it brings more opportunities within the social and cooperative dimension.
The developers of Diablo IV have incorporated an extensive Open World feature that restores the authentic Diablo atmosphere of isolation and allows for a good deal of exploration, the greater amount of content in the form of Dungeons, World Events, Quests, and occasional Player-versus-Player action set in designated zones called Fields of Hatred. Also, instead of a zone-division structure according to the levels, Diablo IV uses a scaling system that adjusts the difficulty based on your character’s level, keeping the content viable at all times without the possibility of out-growing it.
Changes in Gameplay and Classes
When Diablo III was originally released in 2012, it offered five diverse classes to choose from: Barbarian, Wizard, Witch Doctor, Demon Hunter, and Monk. With the expansions, two more classes, Crusader and Necromancer, were added to the list of playable characters. New Diablo IV also features five one-of-a-kind classes, namely Barbarian, Druid, Necromancer, Rogue, and Sorceress, borrowing the classes from the previous Diablo games and, apart from some refining changes and adding more abilities, keeping the classes’ gameplay parallel to the predecessors.
Both Diablo III and IV employ the feature of unique Resources used by different classes; for example, Barbarian’s Resource would be exclusively Fury. However, Diablo IV has undergone an upgrade in the form of a new, gradually revealing Skill Tree that each player can customize according to their preferences.
This way, players often create their own builds complimenting their personal play style.

While the combat itself may be considered easier and graphically more impressive in Diablo III, Diablo IV requires a more tactical playstyle, the fights are overall more engaging in the newer Diablo, as you cannot just mindlessly annihilate a group of monsters but have to stay considerate towards your resources while keeping the combat momentum.

Upgrade of Diablo Trading System
The Diablo franchise had already introduced trading in Diablo II; however, the item exchange between players has been fully implemented only in Diablo III. While most Diablo III players relied on Auction House to sell and barter, in Diablo IV, players are forced to resort to in-game trading between characters, for which Blizzard developers have created special trading channels on Battle.net.
Tip: To successfully conduct a trade, you have to invite the other player into a party to avoid the possible server sharding. Choose the trading destination, and while being in the proximity of the other player, select “Invite to Trade” in the action menu. When your party member accepts the request, you can put the item into the trading tab and then, to conclude the trade, select “Lock in Offer".
Although trading has opened a new practice for acquiring needed items, it is subjected to a number of limitations. In Diablo III, most items were automatically Account-Bound, and gold, as the main currency, could not be transferred. That radically changes in Diablo IV, for players can exchange Common, Rare, and Magic items, gems, and elixirs, and they are allowed to trade with d4 gold.
However, all Enchanted and most Legendary items are non-tradable, together with Quest items, Unique items, Aspects, Obols, and any special currencies connected to the account. Therefore, while trading can be incredibly helpful while leveling the character, in the end-game, players have to return to loot and grind in order to progress their character.

Diablo IV and Diablo III: Overview and Final Thoughts
Even though we agree Diablo III has been an amazing game for the combination of the storyline and user-friendly level progression, we admit that Diablo IV offers upgrades that will be appreciated by many players, even when it comes to small changes such as slightly better response time, more detailed resolution, or traversal points that provide more vertical depth, or the big transforming changes like character customization, online-based Open World, difficulty-scaling system, and branching Skill Tree.
