WoW Midnight Patch 12.1.5: What Actually Matters & What to Do First
Patch 12.1.5 dropped this week (NA Oct 13, EU Oct 14, CN Oct 15 after maintenance). If you have been away from WoW for a bit or just want to know what is worth your time without reading 40 pages of patch notes, this is for you.
The Short Version
Three big things happened:
- Kith'ix raid -- single boss, four difficulties, Mythic now supports 15-25 players with flex
- Labyrinth of Kindo'jan -- a 9-chamber "mega-delve" that takes way longer than normal delves and drops real loot
- Crest cap is getting removed (week of Oct 20) + new Ascendant Venomstone upgrade system
Plus Aqir Invasions every hour, some class tweaks, and a new campaign chapter.
What Should I Do First?
Log in and check one thing: did you finish the Nebulous Voidcore quest chain? Specifically, look for "Umbral Blessings of the Catalyst" in your log. If it is not done, go to Silvermoon City, find Orin Straylight, and clean that up. Takes maybe 10 minutes. If you skip this, you delay access to the new upgrade system by a full week.
After that, grab "Ancient Depths, Ancient Venom" from Orin and turn it in at next reset. That kicks off his research into Ascendant Venomstones.
Kith'ix Raid -- One Boss, But It Works
Yes, it is a single-boss raid. I know what you are thinking because everyone said the same thing when it was announced. But having run it now, the fight is solid. Lady Liadrin fights alongside you, the mechanics are interesting without being overcomplicated, and it actually wraps up the Quel'Thalas vs Zul'Aman story that has been building all expansion.
Four difficulties: Story (see the ending), Normal, Heroic, and Mythic. The Mythic flex sizing (15-25 players) is something raid leaders have wanted for a long time, so if you run Mythic, your group no longer has to bench people because you are sitting at 23 bodies on raid night.
Verdict: clear it on Normal or Heroic at minimum. The loot is worth it and the fight is genuinely good.
Labyrinth of Kindo'jan -- Delve But Bigger
If you like Delves but wished they had more meat on them, this is for you. Nine chambers inside an old Amani tomb, each with its own enemies and mechanics. Valeera Sanguinar runs with you as a companion this time.
The structure is flexible. You can blast through all nine in one go if you have an hour, or clear a few chambers and come back later. Rewards scale with how many chambers you clear in a single run. Full clear can drop up to three Bountiful Coffers plus six extra reward trunks. That is serious loot.
Once you clear all nine at Tier 8 or higher, you unlock Kindo'jan himself -- a Tier 11 solo boss that drops Mythic-quality gear. If you enjoy pushing difficult content alone, this is probably your highlight of the patch.
There is also a Renown track attached to the Labyrinth, so it is not a one-and-done thing. Blizzard is clearly trying to give solo players more to do, and this is a step in the right direction.
The Gearing Stuff -- Read This Part
This affects the most players, so pay attention. The mid-season gearing refresh rolls out over three weeks, and we are currently in week two.
What already happened (Oct 6): Orin showed up in Silvermoon offering bonus Voidcore rolls. Quest chain started. Hopefully you did this.
What just happened (Oct 13): Patch went live. Orin gives "Ancient Depths, Ancient Venom." Turn it in, wait a week for research.
What happens next week (Oct 20): Two things at once. Ascendant Venomstones start dropping from endgame content, and the crest cap gets lifted.
Why the Crest Cap Matters
Right now there is a weekly limit on crests. Hit the cap and extra runs give you nothing for upgrades. After Oct 20, that limit is gone. Every Heroic/Mythic raid boss, every Mythic+10 or higher, every Tier 11 Delve, every Nightmare Prey Hunt chest -- all of it counts again. If you play a lot, this is huge. If you are behind on gear, this is even bigger.
Ascendant Venomstones
These drop from the same content that starts giving crests again. Collect ten, take them to the Catalyst in Silvermoon, and you can bump up one piece of gear.
Catch: only works on weapons, trinkets, and necklaces, and the piece must already be fully upgraded on your current track (Heroic/Mythic/max crafted). You cannot just throw stones at whatever slot is low.
My advice: weapon first (biggest DPS gain per item level), then your best trinket (especially if it is something you will keep for a while), then whatever has the biggest gap between what you have and what is available. Do not waste stones upgrading a piece you will replace next week.
If you need gold to speed things up or just want to cut down the grind time, there are wow gold options that can help bridge the gap without turning WoW into a second job.
Aqir Invasions -- Quick and Painless
Every hour on the hour, Eversong Woods or Zul'Aman gets invaded by Aqir. You get 10 minutes to complete objectives before it ends. Different invasions have different affixes (burrowers knocking you around, void explosions, web traps, etc.), so they do not feel identical every time.
Rewards are not game-breaking, but they are decent for the time investment. Good thing to do while waiting for your raid or dungeon queue to pop. For more tips on making the most of Midnight's systems, check out our latest WoW guides.
Class Changes -- Quick Hits
Nothing meta-shattering here, but a couple of quality-of-life fixes worth noting:
Demon Hunter (Devourer): Collapsing Star no longer punishes you with a cooldown if the target moves slightly during cast. Effective range increased too. Feels much smoother now.
Restoration Druid: Nature's Bounty redesigned. Regrowth now heals up to three allies with Rejuvenation for 15% of the spell's healing, prioritizing lowest health. More reliable AoE without being brainless.
That is about it for class changes. If your main was not mentioned, you probably did not gain or lose anything dramatic this patch.
So Is This Patch Worth Coming Back For?
Honestly, yes. The crest cap removal alone changes how the second half of Season 2 plays out. The Labyrinth is good content if you enjoy solo stuff. Kith'ix is a well-designed fight that actually pays off the story. And the Venomstone system gives you something to work toward once your regular upgrades dry up.
If you are debating whether to resub or hop back in, this is as good a reason as any. Log in, clear your quests, get your loot, and grab some gold if you need it to smooth out the gearing process. See you in Azeroth.
