What New Jobs Could FFXIV 8.0 Bring? A Veteran’s Take

Dawntrail is wrapping up, which means FFXIV 8.0 is almost here. Every expansion excites players not just for story or new areas, but for new jobs. If you look at the past few expansions, there’s a pattern: one caster, one melee, a tank in some expansions, a healer in others. So where might the next new jobs fall?

Veteran players like me have been speculating, and one thing seems likely: a new tank and a fizz range job. Let’s break it down.

5.0

Potential Tank Jobs: Viking or Mystic Knight?

Historically, tank roles have been underrepresented in Fizz range, so a new addition would shake things up. Two classic Final Fantasy options come to mind:

Viking Tank

  • Weapon: Dual-wielding axes or axe + shield.
  • Gameplay: Fast GCD with high burst windows, similar to Monk or Ninja.
  • Aesthetic: Heavy armor, fits well in zones like Kuzia with dwarves.
  • Impact: Could bring an aggressive, flashy tank option with unique animations.

Mystic Knight

  • Weapon: Sword and shield.
  • Gameplay: Toggle magic-infused blade attacks. Sleep or AoE effects could provide dungeon mitigation.
  • Impact: Adds magic utility to tanking, which Paladin currently lacks.

Both jobs would bring fresh tank mechanics, making dungeons and raids more dynamic.

The Almost-Certain Fizz Range Job

Fizz ranged roles are long overdue for new options. Here are the front-runners:

Puppet Master

  • Draws inspiration from FFXI, with customizable minions.
  • Could add personal flair through puppet glamours and varied mechanics.
  • Likely a fan favorite due to its unique identity and historical nods.

Speculative Fun: Blitz Ball

  • Inspired by FFX, could integrate Gold Saucer mini-games.
  • Abilities might include element-infused attacks, team buffs, or fun LB3 effects.
  • Highly creative and could offer a whimsical gameplay twist, though likely less probable than Puppet Master.

Other possibilities: Chemist, Engineer-style ranged support, or even a spear-based tank with channeled abilities. The devs have flexibility to introduce mechanics entirely unique to FFXIV.

Patterns and Job Balance

Looking at recent expansions:

  • Stormblood: caster + melee
  • Shadowbringers: tank + healer
  • Endwalker: healer + melee
  • Dawn Trail: caster + melee

If this pattern continues, a tank and fizz range combo is plausible. With Fizz range currently underrepresented, the expansion could finally balance out the job roster.

Closing Thoughts

FFXIV 8.0’s job reveal is one of the most anticipated aspects of the expansion. Whether it’s Viking, Mystic Knight, Puppet Master, or even a whimsical Blitz Ball job, the possibilities are endless.

What’s important is that the next jobs feel fresh, unique, and fun, while the reworks keep older jobs engaging. I, for one, am keeping my expectations high for clever dungeon mechanics, exciting raids, and possibly a Final Fantasy 7-themed alliance raid.

If you’ve got your own ideas for the next tank or fizz range job, drop them in the comments. One thing’s for sure: the next expansion is shaping up to be a wild ride for all adventurers in Eorzea.
