Review on TERA(KR) OB Graphics

TERA launched its open beta test in South Korea on January 11th. Based on Unreal Engine 3, TERA's graphics are always the focus of players. The graphical settings of this OBT version are classified into 6 grades. We have chosen two scenes to contrast their graphics in 6 different grades. The graphics are numbered from 0 to 5. The computer used for test has an ATI Radeon HD 5850 graphics card, which can ensure 40 fps at most, a Core i5 750/2.66GHz CPU, and 1920x1200 resolution. (Source: 4gamer.net)

Graphical Grade 0: 80 fps
Graphical Grade 1: 80 fps
Graphical Grade 2: 70-75 fps
Graphical Grade 3: 60 fps
Graphical Grade 4: 48-50 fps
Graphical Grade 5: 40-42 fps

Scene 1

- Graphical Grade 0: The scenery in front of the raccoon is quite common, but the water surface effect is vivid.

- Graphical Grade 1: The graphics are improved obviously, with HDR light effects.

- Graphical Grade 2: The details of the remote buildings are more apparent, giving rise to an illusion of depth. Diversified shapes can be seen.

- Graphical Grade 3: Various details from the near to the distant are more visible, and the character produces a shadow, achieving a stronger third dimension.

- Graphical Grade 4: No much difference from grade 3, but the opposite bank seems to be covered with grass.

- Graphical Grade 5: The water surface effect seems better than that produced by the previous grade.

40 fps graphics are very necessary for MMORPGs. Only in this way can the requirement for the game's action performance be met. If 80 fps is gotten, a better feeling of striking can be achieved. Therefore, it is suitable to choose a graphics card like Radeon HD 5850.

- Graphical Grade 1: Light effects are added, and buildings have basic shadow effects.

- Graphical Grade 2: Clouds appear in the sky, but in the Scene 1, clouds can be seen for the first time in Grade 1. Besides, the character has rough shadow effects.

- Graphical Grade 3: The character's shadow and details are more delicate.

- Graphical Grade 4: No great changes have taken place in comparison with Grade 3, but the details of the tower in the distance look more exquisite.

- Graphical Grade 5: Shadows are more delicate, and more details of the remote tower can be seen.

As Radeon HD 5850 is a comparatively high-end graphics card at present, lots of players are still worried. From the test results, we can see that graphics above grade 4 don't look much better, so the graphical grade 3 is a very satisfying choice. As for this OBT in South Korea, people can play TERA quite smoothly with GeForce GT 250/ATI Radeon HD 4850 or better specifications.

In addition, the test results achieved by means of the integrated graphics card AMD 785G (ATI Radeon HD 4200) are shown below:

Graphical Grade 0: 21 fps
Graphical Grade 1: 14 fps
Graphical Grade 2: 7 fps
Graphical Grade 3: 7 fps
Graphical Grade 4: 7 fps
Graphical Grade 5: 7 fps

It is uncertain whether the game scenes can be displayed correctly when graphical grade 3 or above is chosen. Certainly, the game won't lag even if you choose graphical grade 0, but please try not to use such graphics cards to play this game.
