Classic WoW and the Grind - Part 2: A Deeper Look

Contrary to what almost everyone at level sixty will tell you, the journey to sixty IS the game for most people.

Classic WoW Grind
As we mentioned in our last post, a large portion of the player base spend theirsweet time, usually a few months at least, logging on several hours a week andknocking out a few quests, dungeons, or levels. Getting there quickly is thenew meta, and stopping to smell the roses is sometimes frowned upon byimpatient guild mates or friends who want you to do things the "rightway". The biggest difference between Vanilla as it was, and Classic as itis now, is the player base and their knowledge of the game. Back then, we had littleinsight into the gameplay of the game’s top player base, and had a fraction ofthe resources available today.

Should I have fun or do it ‘right’?

For starters, the seemingly endless list of things to do, quests to complete, people to meet, and areas to explore means that not only is there potential to play for years and not get bored, but there is something for everyone. The beauty of WoW Classic is the detail that has been squeezed into every aspect of the game; almost every corner of the map has been filled with creatures to kill, caves to explore, NPCs to help, flowers to pick, and so on. If you were to play a game like this in the usual way that a single player game is played, for example, you might enjoy it massively, or you might get bored and burned out by the tenth “kill quest”. At every stage of the game, even at the very beginning, players start to diverge into different patterns of play, picking different quest chains and paths up the level system. Even at maximum level, there are a lot of different activities to partake in. The thing is, with so many things to ‘distract’ you from the most efficient path to max level, will you play the game the way that makes you happy, or do you fall to peer pressure and trade that fun for ‘efficiency’?

There’s another point to be made here that a lot of people don’t consider - your leveling process (and most other activities in the game, for that matter), can be HUGELY benefited by having some excess gold around - more on that later on.

If someone tells you to drop a quest chain that you were looking forward to because it gives poor rewards or experience for your time, should you listen to them? Maybe. Do you get a bigger kick out of seeing your DPS tick up slightly, or getting sucked into the lore and character development that Blizzard worked on all those years ago? Do you live for world PvP and social interactions, or do you prefer to see how fast you can clear ‘The Deadmines’ at level 35? A lot of things about this game are certainly repetitive and grindy, but that's just the nature of the MMO beast; I urge you to really consider what floats your own boat, and that will help you to want to continue playing just for the fun of it!

The vast majority of my most memorable moments in Vanilla WoW have nothing to do with item drops, boss kills, battleground wins, or DPS numbers. Those things all factor in to the experience, but honestly even after grinding for weeks on a single dungeon to have an item finally drop, you are usually so burned out by the experience that you often don’t really feel all that happy about it. If that’s all you want from the game, go ahead and do that, but I would urge you to consider making your in-game experience so much smoother by purchasing some WoW Classic gold from SSEGold.com! More on that at the end.

I hope that some of the ideas in this article might help you decide what sort of fun you might want to get into, seeing as this game is so big, with so much to do. Let me just preface this with that you need to make your own fun! Seriously! If you aren't super invested in the quest line or zone you are roaming around in, take a break and search for some rare mobs, work on your professions, or go looking for friends!

Some friendly tips on how to have a good time - by no means a comprehensive list, but some things to consider.

1. Spells and Abilities:

Setting out alone or with some friends and making yourself a silly objective is one of the best ways to have fun in a game like this. Finding fun ways to combine yours and others’ spells and abilities can also be a lot of fun. Look out for any spells that change your movement speed, affect targets in a radius (AoE), make you invulnerable/invisible, or change your appearance. With a little creativity and teamwork, you can have a blast!

2. Rare Mobs, Pets, and Mounts!

For those who like looking the part, check out some of the rarer hunter pets (if you happen to be a member of that class), or various mounts available from your faction. Just because your race has certain mounts doesn’t mean you can’t pick up a mount from another race’s capital! Just be prepared for a reputation grind! If you are high enough level, I would seriously consider hiking back to take out some of the scarier high leveled mobs that roam some of the lower level areas. Take the huge dinosaurs in Un’Goro, for example, or the enormous stone golems that roam Arathi Highlands. More than once during leveling you were probably caught off-guard and forced to run away scared, well now you can get your vengeance!

3. Social Events and World PvP:

Especially if you are on a PvP server (and you should be!), you should know that some of the most enjoyment you can have in this game is with a fun group of friends (or strangers) who all set out on the same goal. Maybe it’s as small as trying to take out a few guard NPCs from an enemy faction town, or maybe several guilds join forces to take over the Orgrimmar Zeppelin as Alliance, or the Menethil Harbour Boat as Horde. One of the most fun things I ever did was take part in a level-one killing spree where several hundred people rolled level one characters and went to higher level zones to try and take on high levelled mobs.

The truth about your time

Your time is absolutely your most valuable resource in this game; the more time you spend doing what you want, the less time you spend making memories that you will resent down the line. I can tell you from personal experience that the type of grind it takes to get enough gold, for example, to do whatever you want, would make your head spin. If you haven’t already, consider purchasing some gold from SSEGold.com, an industry leader in providing game currency - fast, safe, and reliable.
